Tether your Android phone/laptop with PDAnet

PDAnet for AndroidAs I commute form the Central Coast to Sydney everyday for work I use this app to get my laptop online while on the train. It's simple and works well, plus charges my phone at the same time as it works over the USB connection.

Worth noting:

  • You do NOT have to be a ROOT user on your phone
  • You will need to download the system tray application for your computer and follow the instructions to install the Adnroid application on your phone. As this is a third-party application for Android and not on the Market (that I can see), you may also need to "Allow install of non-Market applications" from within your phone's settings (Settings -> Applications -> Unknown Sources)

I was able to get a free version a while back but now it seems there is a $29 (USD?) price tag on the application.

Anyway, if you're an Android OS user like myself (I have the HTC Dream handset), and love your internet connection when roaming with your laptop, you might want to check it out:

QUOTE FROM THE SITE:

"PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes ... It is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly.

PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone's firmware in order to work. It is just a regular Android application that works on Android phones as-is. Currently PdaNet supports USB tethering on all Android OS's and devices. Tethering is fast, secure and will also charge your phone at the same time. Your phone can either connect to 3G data or WiFi, even through VPN and PdaNet will share the connection with your computer."
